Here’s where it all started: in 2018 I bought a bike and flew to Vietnam for a three month solo bike tour in Southeast Asia.
After struggling through the beautiful but steep mountains of northern Vietnam, I crossed into Laos and rode south to Luang Prabang along more relaxing roads. From there I pedaled south along the Mekong, continuing to enjoy the mellowness of bike touring in Laos.
Cambodia was a bit grittier and the highways more chaotic, but there was still good riding to enjoy and some amazing archaeological ruins to explore. I criss-crossed the small country three times en route to the southern border with Thailand. From there a mad dash through touristy resort towns led into Bangkok, one of the most chaotic days of riding I’ve ever experienced.
This first bike tour was a dream, a challenge, and a revelation. If I could do this, what else could I do? I was hooked.
