Clipless or Flat?

This is a heated debate! If you already like clipless pedals, you can definitely use them for bikepacking. You just need comfy flexible 2-bolt SPD shoes that you can do some walking in. If you already prefer flats, that's great too, you'll have an easier time balancing the needs of pedaling and walking on a long trip.

Pins or Not?

Do you need bikepacking pedals for mountain biking on technical trails, or will you mainly be pedaling smooth gravel roads? MTB pedals have larger platforms and more aggressive traction pins to help your feet stick in place.

Platform or Not?

Many popular bikepacking pedals have a platform, even if they also have SPD clips. The platform supports the foot for better stability and all-day pedaling comfort, and allows for a flexier shoe that's easier to walk in. It even makes it easier to pedal a short distance without clipping in, a nice emergency option for long bikepacking trips.

Flat Pedals

Bikepacking Pedal Type #1

Simple and easy to pair with comfy walking shoes for flexibility on multi-day trips, flat pedals are a great choice for technical MTB trails, long-haul bicycle trips, or anyone who doesn't like clipless. Example:

XC SPD Pedals

Bikepacking Pedal Type #2

These minimalist clipless pedals are best for experienced trail riders and speed-focused gravel riders. You'll need to pair them with a stiff SPD shoe, which makes walking less comfortable. Best for rides where you plan to do a lot of pedaling and not much walking. Example:

Platform SPD Pedals

Bikepacking Pedal Type #3

These MTB pedals blend the stability and precision of clipless with the support and comfort of a platform, making them an excellent choice for bikepacking pedals on any terrain. You can use a slightly flexier shoe and can even ride a short distance in non-SPD shoes, if needed. Example:

Single-Sided SPD Pedals

Bikepacking Pedal Type #4

My all-time favorite type of bikepacking pedal, these have an SPD mechanism on one side and a platform on the other. You can ride either side depending on conditions or footwear. Ultimate flexibility! Example:
