Are you itching to hit the slopes this winter? The gorgeous mountains surrounding Lake Tahoe have over a dozen ski resorts to choose from! I've been skiing at Tahoe for over three decades and these are my favorite spots for every type of skier or boarder.
A large resort straddling the CA-NV state line, Heavenly is known for its wide range of terrain suited to all levels. More advanced skiers like the bumps and tree skiing, and experts can find challenge in Mott Canyon. The view of the lake is stunning, and nearby lodging is plentiful.
My personal favorite, Kirkwood is a bit smaller but has amazing snow quality and varied terrain, including plenty of advanced and expert runs. It can be hard to get to in snowy weather and lodging nearby is limited, but tickets are less expensive than Heavenly and it's a great value in my opinion.
I spent my childhood skiing at Northstar, a great resort for intermediates with tons of accessible mellow terrain. It doesn't have the best snow during low-snow years, but when that's not an issue it's a great pick at the north end of Tahoe.
Smaller, cheaper, and closer to the Bay Area but still offering interesting terrain, Sierra at Tahoe is a great Tahoe ski resort for a quick visit. You'll pack in more runs by avoiding crowds and long traverses, and skip the worst of the Tahoe traffic.
